I’m now 100% legal and ready to ride. The insurance was a bit more than I hoped for since my insurance company wouldn’t cover new riders, only riders with 2+ years of experience. I had to go through a separate company that specializes in new riders. I’m looking at $318/year with this company and I had to pay the full amount up front. It also cost me $43 bucks for the plate.

It was an expensive day but it will be worth it in the end.

$318 a year? A young man in Ontario is currently crying. That young man is me.

Yeah but I’m an old man with a clean record and this is bare minimum coverage. It’ll be under $200 next year once I’m fully licensed.

It’s because I’m not licensed yet, I just have the learners permit. it’ll be lower next year.

Congratulations!

I’ve got liability only on a sport bike at $99/year. I’m not sure that’s a good price, but I have been riding for over 10 years. Having no citations in the last 5 years helps too.

Ha, good thing there’s a money mart right next door! Let me guess; the liquor store was on the other side?

Enjoy the journies.

Moto insurance must be expensive in the great white north. You can’t put that many miles on it...

It costs me $90 a year total for 3 bikes (liability only) down here.

It’s because I’m not fully licensed yet. There was only one company that would ensure me and that was the price. I can’t pass the license test without insurance on the bike so I pretty much had no choice. Next year should be A LOT cheaper.

Well you better get to riding. It’s the only way you will get your money’s worth out of this years insurance :)

I remember when I got my first motorcycle plates.

Before I could get them, I had to prove to the DMV that I had insurance. I did not have any at the time, so I opened the yellow pages.

I knew it was going to be expensive, and it was. They quoted me something like $80/month. I didn’t have much of a choice, so I paid for the first month.

I rode the motorcycle from the strip mall insurance office straight to the DMV and got plates. Finally, I was ready to roll. I was looking forward to this, since the motorcycle was an upgrade to the bicycle I had been riding prior.

A month later, the insurance company sent me a letter, telling me they would not cover me anymore because I didn’t meet one of their nit-picky requirements.

I had a suspended license.

At least the bike was legal.

That’s the plan. I need to rewire the fuse box on the bike(more on that later tonight) it’s only 4 fuses so no big deal. I’ll be fully ready to go by tomorrow.

Nearly every bike I've bought has several wiring issues that have to be straightened out. It's par for the course with used bikes. Good Luck!

Kinda terrible that's how it's almost always set up. The package store I go to sometimes has a cash checking cage in the corner with bullet proof glass. All the title loan/money lender places have a package store within 50 yards near me.

I didn’t meet one of their nit-picky requirements.

Now why would a little thing like that bother them?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Same here you need insurance to get plates.

You need insurance to get your license but you can’t (easily) get insurance because you have no license.

I need to change it up to blade fuses. It has glass tube fuses and when I went to change the headlight fuse the fuse holder broke. There is only 4 fuses to rewire so it should take all of 15 mins to fix.

Congrats! That’s a hard financial hit to take up front but you’re right that it’ll only get better with time. Once licensed and with some incident-free miles behind you the insurance will come right down.

“expensive insurance”
“318 a year”

LOL dude. come to ontario. Some ppl some people pay 318 MONTHLY. and thats cheap for them.

I think I got quoted something like 500 a month first company I called. worst part? they were about mid pack for what a company wanted for a 16 year old on a Buell blast at the time.

I pay $238/year for a 6,000lbs truck so there is no way I thought a 450lbs motorcycle could cost more to insure.

I’d walk if I had to pay 300+/month on anything for insurance.

I currently pay $94/month for full coverage on my 2 four wheeled vehicles.

It just sucks I had to pay it up front. I’d much rather pay $26/month.

I know I’m just speaking with logic here. I would do way more damage if I crashed the truck than the bike so why is the bike more.

But I know they take risk and experience all into effect and that is why it is higher.

They said once I’m has my full class 6 it would drop by half of what it is now.

Kinja'd!!! bob and john > Luc - The Acadian Oppo

but its WAY easier to crash the bike (lowside/high side) and whilst you might not do as much PROPERTY damage, damage to you will be a bit more.

and have you SEEN what doctors charge?

Not bad at all. Insurance is expensive no matter how you look at it. Mine is 277 for a year, full coverage on a more expensive bike. And I told them I’ve been riding for ten years, which isn’t untrue, but they didn’t ask how long it’s been since I last rode (at least 7 years!).
